We’re excited to share that our paper introducing AutoTI, an automated system for studying reasoning in mice, has been published in Scientific Reports!

Transitive inference is a simple but powerful form of reasoning: if A > B and B > C, we can infer that A > C—even without seeing that comparison directly. Many animals, including mice, can perform this kind of inference. To study this ability more efficiently, we developed AutoTI, a cost-effective, open-source behavioural apparatus that automates stimulus presentation, precisely controls task timing, and records detailed behavioral data. The system also allows continuous monitoring of movement trajectories, providing richer insight into how mice make decisions. Using AutoTI, we established a robust training protocol and found that mice show classic behavioural patterns seen in humans. We hope this tool will help researchers investigate the neural basis of reasoning and support studies of cognitive impairments in disorders such as autism, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s disease.
